The Asian Art Museum's

Humanities West will celebrate both its own 30th anniversary and the Verdi bicentennial on Nov. 1 and 2, with a program of lectures, discussions, and musical performances on the subject of "Verdi’s Masterwork: Opera and the Birth of Modern Italy." The venue is the Marines’ Memorial Theater.

Charles Ives was a terrific young musician, son of a bandleader, who went to Yale and studied composition with the highly regarded Horatio Parker. But he had wild musical ideas in his head and his Yankee practicality discouraged him from trying to push those ideas through a conservative musical establishment.
